If the idea of having a root canal makes you nervous, you are in good company. The perception of this procedure as complicated and painful is widespread, but the truth is, advancements in technology and techniques have made root canal treatments much more routine and in many cases, even easy. The combined knowledge, training, and equipment our endodontist uses allows us to provide the most comfortable root canal treatments possible.

Understanding the Treatment Process

Root canal treatments have the end goal of removing an infection from the root of a tooth. Most root canal treatments involve at least two appointments with your Myrtle Beach endodontist. The first appointment focuses on removing any infected nerve tissue from the tooth before the tooth is dressed. The first appointment also generally alleviates any pain you may be experiencing. During the second appointment, the root is cleaned, disinfected, shaped, measured and filled to prevent any further infection. A treatment session usually only lasts about 90 minutes.

Making Comfort a Priority

Proper care and comfort are our top priorities during a root canal procedure. There are different sedation methods based on your specific preferences, and we will review all of your options with you prior to your scheduled appointment. We’ll take the necessary steps to improve your comfort level during treatment. We will put all of your concerns to rest and ensure you are relaxed and comfortable throughout the root canal.

Keeping You Comfortable Post-Treatment

Once your root canal has been completed, it is normal to experience some discomfort as your mouth heals. This post-treatment pain usually fades within a day or so, but you can discuss it with our team if you require post-treatment medication. Taking care of your teeth after a root canal treatment is a must. Try avoiding hard and crunchy foods, and avoid or quit smoking to help speed your recovery time.

Any dental procedure can seem intimidating at first, but as with anything else, knowledge is power. Knowing what to expect before, during, and after a root canal can set proper expectations and help you approach the procedure with a positive outlook.
